  Yes! Space in city centres is at such a premium, even in the West. YO! Home allows you to buy less of this space, whilst maintaining the usability of a much larger home. Plus, they are for the young at heart – the Austin Powers out there. If Simon had done market research asking people if they wanted raw fish delivered on a conveyor belt, or if they wanted small capsule hotel rooms with no windows, what would the responses have been? The YO! Home is not so much an issue of East vs. West, but more a general overarching change in the way we all live.

  We’re building the first 24 apartments modularly, in a factory. Not dissimilar to a car factory, we start at one end and by the time it reaches the other, the finished apartment is lifted onto a truck and delivered to site. The structural integrity is in the ‘box’ itself, so they’re stacked on-site, a bit like lego, and services are connected. This process reduces on-site costs, and eliminates factors such as weather affecting build times, and therefore cost, allowing us to bring luxury living to everyone.

  Each apartment will come with a warrantee, and each block will have a dedicated management team on call in the unlikely event that any issues arise.

  The same way as you would in a ‘normal’ apartment: with a paintbrush, some creativity, fabric and flare! Items such as the sofa covers are zipped and can therefore be changed. Each apartment will come with a manual giving all measurements – making your life much easier should you wish to change anything.

  As did we – therefore we are on our second prototype, and have spent hours living and working within the space trying to find any issues before we roll the apartments out.

  Yes! One end is entirely glass, floor to ceiling, with a door section that slides back opening the YO! Home up to the outside. It also provides an incredible view (location dependent of course!).

  Each property or block will have a dedicated management company looking after these needs. We’re also including manual elements such as a manual handle in case there are power cuts, for example. We don’t want the bed stuck in the ceiling!

  Can I get trapped in the ceiling?

  No. We’ve introduced fail-safe sensors that won’t allow the bed to lift if there is additional weight on the bed platform, for example, or something or someone underneath it. The control system will be a press-and-hold button, meaning the person in control of it at the time can stop the motion by simply releasing the button if it needs to be stopped.

  The TV and cinema are accessible from bed as well as the lounge – so someone can go to bed whilst the other watches a movie. A pair of headphones or earplugs might come in handy, but this is no different to a ‘normal’ studio.
