YO! Launches YO! Home at 100% Design
Press Release: 27 Sep 2012
You’ve eaten in YO! Sushi, You’ve stayed in YOTEL…
Now will you live in YO! Home?
YO! Home, the pioneering and intuitive living space set to revolutionise the contemporary home, launched in Septmber 2012 London to rave reviews at the 100% Design exhibition. Conceived and developed by Simon Woodroffe, the man responsible for YO! Sushi and YOTEL, YO! Home aims to transform the way we live.
Over 25,000 visitors flocked to the UK’s largest design show at Earls Court to experience the home of the future. Woodroffe indefatigably toured queues of visitors around his innovative and surprising concept home, which delighted the crowds with thoughtful and intelligent design solutions living in smaller spaces. At eighty square metres, the prototype space mimics the footprint of a standard one bedroom apartment, and yet offers unprecedented and luxuriously spacious living. At the pull of a wall, the opening of a floor or the press of a button, the space provides: a master bedroom suite; a second bedroom; a sunken sitting room; a cinema; a dining room; an office; a full size kitchen; a breakfast room; a bathroom/spa; a party room; a wine cellar, and additional hidden storage.
Woodroffe comments: “I think homes help shape our lives. They are our refuge, and our rock. Since the invention of the city centre apartment, we’ve never really re-invented it. YO! Home is that new invention. Twelve moving parts draw on a wealth of engineering technology taken from fields as diverse as yacht and automotive design and the mechanics of stage production, allowing the transformation of an eighty square metre space (the size of a one bedroom apartment) into a much bigger home.”
As with YO! Sushi, Woodroffe has been heavily influenced by the principles of Japanese living, where the simple and adaptable layout of traditional rooms allows many activities to take place in the same space. YO! Home also draws on Woodroffe’s previous career as a rock show stage designer. Developed by a team of experts who have mastered stage mechanics for West End musicals and rock shows around the world, YO! Home is also inspired by the spaces of YOTEL, and the layouts of houseboats and super-yachts.
Woodroffe continues: “The technologies we have used are already established in car design, super-yachts and theatre; their application in the home is long overdue. The time-honoured architecture of the stage brings with it the basic principles of counter-weights and moving parts, allowing safe, easy and low-energy movement of large elements such as the bed and wall. More high-tech elements, such as sensors and electronics, will make the concept easy to use and family-proof.”
The moving mechanics were assembled in specialist workshops in South London, by a wide range of engineers and craftsmen, many of whom were recently employed to deliver the spectacular London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic opening and closing ceremonies.
These moving mechanics allow YO! Home to deliver 4 x eighty square metre rooms: sitting room, bedroom, kitchen/dining room and office, plus two cinemas and a separate guest room/study all in an eighty square metre apartment.
YO! Home acts as a reinvention to the urban apartment, offering a completely new concept for compact living around the world. Through a commitment to high quality living, without the associated high costs, Woodroffe believes this will attract buyers of all ages and backgrounds making YO! Home another success within the YO! brand.
